Lemmings 2 & 3 on Windows 98
I have an old PC with Windows 98. I'm trying to get Lemmings 2 and 3 to run. Here are my situations.

Lemmings 2: I exit to DOS from Win98, and try to run L2. It freezes when it tells me how much memory I have. Either way, my optical mouse doesn't work under DOS. I can't use DOSbox because my PC is only 450 mhz, which means it would be REALLY slow, but I know from another computer that L2 will run that way. It also freezes when running inside Win98.

Lemmings 3/Chronicles/All New World of Lemmings: Won't even start in DOS or Win98. Gives me Runtime Error, but not on the Windows 3.11/DOS 6.22 PC I used to have, so I don't have a corrupt copy. DOSbox won't go either. The Lems drown in midair.

Anyone know a patch/fix/configuration that will get these to run?

Re: Lemmings 2 & 3 on Windows 98
I can't help you with Lemmings 3, but I know that Lemmings 2 works fine with a startup disk and a FAT partition on your hard drive.

I think that's my problem... both my HD's are FAT32. not FAT16.  I don't like repartitioning, I already did that for installing Linux along side, and it was chaos. Oh well... :'(

Re: Lemmings 2 & 3 on Windows 98
I have the same problem!

Lemmings 2

Under Win98: Ask to run the game under plain Dos
With Dosbox 0.58: Freeze on memory check
With Dosbox 0.60: Freeze on memory check
With Dosbox 0.61: Freeze on memory check
Under plain Dos: Freeze on memory check

Lemmings 3

Under Win98: Ask to run the game under plain Dos
With Dosbox 0.58: Error!
With Dosbox 0.60: The game run, but with a lot of bugs
With Dosbox 0.61: The game run, but with less bugs
Under plain Dos: Error!

Strange thing: On the website of Dosbox, in section Games, Lemmings 2 seems to run perfectly under Dosbox 0.60. So, it's possible to "p a s s" threw the fu**** memory check!!! But I don't know how!

McAleed have the latest version of Lemmings 3, I guess I'll ask him!

Re: Lemmings 2 & 3 on Windows 98
It is possible to run lemmings in dosbox properly. You can modify the settings-file and give dosbox 66 Mhz (instead of 4) and much more RAM (I use 16 MB).

The MHz are called "cycles per second". So you have to type 66000.

1st: Which Lemmings? 2 or 3?
2nd: Which version of Dosbox?
3rd: Where do you see the number 4 and where do you modify the MHz?
4th: "cycles per second" is the amount of instructions dosbox tries to emulate each millisecond. In other words, it's the speed of the emulation!

Can you explain perfectly what do you said? :???:

Re: Lemmings 2 & 3 on Windows 98
I used an old Version of DosBOX. But it should work with a new one, too. And it was L2.

That cycles are the amount of MHz! But I screwed it up a bit. I said seconds, instead of miliseconds, but 66000 are still correct. Try it. You have to search for 4000.

I just tried it again. Ok, you were right. leave the cycles at 2500. But for some reason it works at me fine. Have you tried a crack? The copy protection might make it freeze.

The game is cracked with the file l2-fix. But it's like that the file do not fix the problem even under Dosbox! :'(

That's poor! I could never play Lemmings 2! :'(

Re: Lemmings 2 & 3 on Windows 98
Well, I got to try the Mhz in DOSBOX thing. When I still had my trusty 486DX2 66/WIN 3.1/DOS 6.22 computer, this same exact version of the games (L2 and 3) worked fine, but in L2, I had to run L2-FIX to start the game or I would be unable to save, and unable to pass any level other than the first level of a tribe. I HAVE gotten L2 to pass the memory check in DOSBOX, it just did it and loaded the game.

Andi: Can you send me L2,maybe? Or L3? What is interesting is that in DOSbox 0.60, Lemmings Chronicles v.1.53 is listed as compatible, but other versions not. My game indicates that it is Lemmings 3 v.1.53 when I quit it. Maybe I have a bugged copy of L3.

I tried it today again and figured out, that the sound doesn't work with 4000 cycles. Try 2500. It works then for me. And use in the setup for L2 Sound Blaster and for the rest the default values.

My config file:

Re: Lemmings 2 & 3 on Windows 98
BTW, I screwed up. Lemmings 3 should run, but my PC is too fast. Setup gives me runtime error, but when I run the game, I get "unable to calibrate timer". Can't get DOSbox to even run at an OK speed no matter what. I can only run games made for the 286 and lower.

Re: Lemmings 2 & 3 on Windows 98
I didn't had any problems running Lemmings 2 under DOSBox, but the game didn't turned out to be fully playable. Whenever I would finish a level, there would be a 15% chance that it would make DOSBox crash because of an unhandled code problem.

Oh, and concerning DOSBox, I found out that a new version (0.62) has been released lately. It can be downloaded on DOSBox's site:

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net

I'll check out if Lemmings 2 still crashes on that new version.

Re: Lemmings 2 & 3 on Windows 98
Have you downloaded it from an abandonware site, unzipped it and ran it straight away? If so, the game will hang up at the memory scan bit because the game isn't properly installed.

Did you run the install program in order to configure your soundcard? Make sure you do so, as the install program also generates additional data that the executable file needs to read in order to run. If you don't do so, it will freeze at the startup like you mentionned. Oddly enough, this was the only thing I needed to do in order to run it under DOSBox.

This should work, although I suggest that you save regulary, DOSBox sometimes crashes when you finish a level. Although it doesn't happen that often, it always happen in those unwanted moments (like going through an entire tribe without saving, finishing the last level with only gold medals and BANG, DOSBox generates a warning error and crash, extremely annoying!). Apart from that bug, the game is pretty much all playable in the latest versions of DOSBox.

On the Dosbox games website, Lemmings 2 doesn't work very well with v0.58 and v0.60. Have you tried using v0.61 and v0.62?

Also, thanks to your suggestions.

Another question: Should I run the Install program under Dos or under Dosbox?

Re: Lemmings 2 & 3 on Windows 98
I've been able to make it work by running the setup program under Windows XP. So, I guess you can easily get away with it by running it either on Windows or DOS. Simply fill the default values for the Sound Blaster card if you want to run the game on DosBox (Lemmings 2's default soundcard settings are the ones that DosBox uses by default, if you haven't changed anything there, the sound will work correctly).

For your information, I use DosBox 0.62.

Re: Lemmings 2 & 3 on Windows 98
I'm also working on running Lemmings 2: The Tribes on my 366MHz Laptop.

I've managed to run it from the Safe Mode Command Prompt: in this version it gives me full sound fx but only the most basic music.

I seem to be having a copy-protection bug?  Which is to say, I actually have the purchased version (manual, tech support doc, box, official 1993 release 3.5" floppy disks and so on), yet I cannot progress beyond level 1 of any given tribe, nor do the save or load commands work.  I have read snippets about this possibly being a copy-protection bug - and although this doesn't make sense given that I possess the full purchased version, SOMETHING is preventing me from getting anywhere nonetheless.

Any help?

I've looked for this specific crack - but all I have found are incomplete versions of the game itself and a fix for the OS/2 that didn't come with instructions or explanation anyway.

Apparently my netsearch skills leave something to be desired - can anyone point me to a specific file that actually works?

Dunno. Never seen these errors. Be sure, to mount the drive with the letter C.

About Error Handler : Error Number 0002 and DOS Error : 2 : File not found, I don't know.

Some files are missings, try to reinstall the game or maybe the copy you have is bad. Try another one.

Get Lemmings 2 from abandonia.com.  I used to have a copy from God knows where that has the same problem you described.  Eventually I found a different copy from abandonia.com and that one works perfectly on my computer under DOSBox, I didn't even have to tweak any of DOSBox's settings.
